RED MEAT - Cry a Little Bit [13/Ranchero Records]
        Brand-new album by my favorite high-cholesterol honky-tonk
country band, produced by Dave Alvin. It's EX-cellent!
PETER CASE - Travellin' Light [THE MAN WITH THE BLUE POSTMODERN
        FRAGMENTED NEO-TRADITIONALIST GUITAR/Geffen]
An old favorite, as are pretty much all of Peter's songs. This
one's out of print now, I think.

JIM MILLS - John Henry Blues [BOUND TO RIDE/Sugar Hill]
Superb bluegrass from the banjo player of Ricky Skaggs' band.
PETER ROWAN - Rainmaker [DUST BOWL CHILDREN/Sugar Hill]
It's so feckin' hot ... 108 outside the studio. This song
        is a plea.
GEORGE PEGRAM - Mississippi Sawyer [GEORGE PEGRAM/Rounder]
This North Carolina banjo player was Rounder's very first release.
CORDELIA'S DAD - Sweet William [HOW CAN I SLEEP?/Omnium]
A very old ballad, from the acoustic part of this half-electric,
half-acoustic album. There's apparently a whole cycle of Sweet
William songs. He was always getting himself into trouble, it
seems, and he usually winds up dead.

CLIFTON CHENIER - Zydeco Cha-Cha [LIVE AT ST. MARK'S/Arhoolie]
A classic from the King of Zydeco, and one of his most-covered
tunes. Last Wed. it was covered by Geno Delafose during his
performance at the Long Beach Museum of Art.
GENO DELAFOSE AND FRENCH ROCKIN' BOOGIE - Save the Last Dance For Me
        [LA CHANSON PERDUE/Rounder]
His sweet, soulful voice is put to good use here in a fine
        cover.
AMEDEE ARDOIN - Les Blues de Basile [THE ROOTS OF ZYDECO/Arhoolie]
Balfa Toujours, who performed with Geno, covered this one.
IRY LEJEUNE - Grande Bosco [CAJUN'S GREATEST/Ace-Goldband]
They covered this one too, from one of Cajun music's greatest
        singers and accordionists.
BALFA TOUJOURS - Deux Voyages [DEUX VOYAGES/Rounder]
From their most recent, a sweet sad song. They did a superb
        show this week.

FRENCH FRITH KAISER THOMPSON - Loch Lomond [INVISIBLE MEANS/Windham Hill]
A butt-kickin' electric version of the Scots traditional song.
If you ever thought you were sick of it, hear this version.
Richard Thompson on vocals and guiar, with John French, Fred
        Frith and Henry Kaiser.
PADDY KEENAN, MARC SIMOS AND CATHAL HAYDEN - Brendan Turra's/Drumshanbo
Fancy/Paddy Clancy's [BOSTON COLLEGE IRISH STUDIES PROGRAM
        CELEBRATES GAELIC ROOTS/Kells]
Marvelous 2-CD set from a series of concerts held at BC. Keenan,
ex-Bothy Band on pipes, Simos on guitar, Hayden on fiddle.
DONAL LUNNY - Across the Hill/An Fainne Oir [DONAL LUNNY/Gael-Linn]
Donal Lunny has a new band, and a new album coming out in a week
and a half, his first since this one in 1987. I'm so excited
about it I could burst. This is a taste to get y'all ready for
        the new one.

DAVY SPILLANE BAND - Litton Lane [OUT OF THE AIR/Tara]
Blues on the Irish pipes. Who'd-a thunk it? He pulls it off, too.
With Rory Gallagher on slide guitar.
SONNY LANDRETH - C'est Chaud [SOUTH OF I-10/Zoo]
More smokin' slide guitar, from Lafayette, Louisiana. It's hot,
        yeah.
ANSON FUNDERBURGH AND SAM MYERS - Don't Quit the One You Love For Me
        [THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT/Black Top]
Keepin' the blues thang going ...
MISSISSIPPI JOHN HURT - Stack O'Lee Blues [BEFORE THE BLUES, VOL. 1 - THE
        EARLY AMERICAN BLACK MUSIC SCENE/Yazoo]
This started as a ballad, well-known to both white and black
musicians. John takes it toward the blues.
BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA - If I Had A Hammer [I BROUGHT HIM WITH ME/House of
        Blues]
From their first-ever live recording. It was during this song that
the general manager called to say how much he was enjoying the show,
and that it was just what he was hoping for when he brought me on.
I never heard this once in ten years at KCRW. Thanks, Rene. :)

OZOMATLI - Como Ves [OZOMATLI/Almo Sounds]
Local L.A. Latin/ska/funk/hip-hop band with at least one foot
in the tradition. Playing two shows this week.
CONJUNTO ALMA JAROCHA - La Guacamaya [SONES JAROCHOS - MUSIC OF MEXICO,
        VOL. 1: VERACRUZ/Arhoolie]
Great traditional son jarocho from Veracruz. If you're a Los
Lobos fan, you'll know this song.

STEVE RILEY AND THE MAMOU PLAYBOYS - Lovers' Waltz [TRACE OF TIME/Rounder]
By Jay Ungar and Molly Mason. Listener request.
DIRK POWELL - God Gave Noah the Rainbow Sign [IF I GO TEN THOUSAND MILES/
        Rounder]
One more 'cause I saw Dirk this week, even tho' he was playing
        Cajun and not old-time.
LEONARD EMANUEL - Old-Timey Holler/Ditty [HOLLERIN'/Rounder]
        Folk-art-singing-hollering from Spivey's Corner, N. Carolina,
where hollerin' to communicate has evolved into a fine folk art.

BUTCH THOMPSON - Buddy Bolden's Blues [NEW ORLEANS JOYS/Daring Records]
One by Jelly Roll Morton, named for one of the founders of jazz.
KID THOMAS VALENTINE - Milneburg Joys [THE LARRY BORNSTEIN COLLECTION,
        VOL. 8/504 Records]
Traditional New Orleans jazz from 1957.
LIL' QUEENIE AND THE PERCOLATORS - My Darlin' New Orleans [45 single/
        Great Southern Records]
A rare classic. If you know N.O. music from the late 70s and
early 80s, you know Leigh "Lil' Queenie" Harris and the legendary
        Percolators.

LAUREL CANYON RAMBLERS - Happy I Am [BACK ON THE STREET AGAIN/Sugar Hill]
Some bluegrass from the new one by these guys, who'll be playing
this weekend, segueing seamlessly into the Jerry Garcia and
David Grisman track that starts tonight's Sarcastic Deadhead ...
