RECOMMENDED SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA RESTAURANTS

Yeah, well ... time doesn't grow on trees, ya know!

I've got a bunch of places where I really like to eat here in the greater L.A. area, but so far I haven't found the time to sit down and type them in. One o' these days ...

But in the meantime, here's my favorite Thai restaurant:

Sanamluang Cafe, Hollywood Boulevard at Kingsley, a few blocks west of Normandie
As far as I'm concerned, the best Thai place in the city. The atmosphere is lacking, and there's often a wait ... but so what, it's worth waiting for. Spicy, flavorful, authentic, vast menu, and almost nothing is over five bucks.

My favorite dish here is pad kee mow, a marvelously flavorful combination of wide rice noodles, ground chicken, tomatoes, onions, chiles, Thai basil and lime leaves. I've had what's essentially the same dish at no less that two dozen other Thai places in town, and none of them has made it a tenth as well as they do here.

Others say Jitlada is the best Thai in town, but I've only eaten there a couple of times. It's good, and it has nice atmosphere ... but for the food I keep going back and back to Sanamluang. Open until 5am!
