VARTTINA - Mie Tahon Tanssia (I Want to Dance) [AITARRA/Green Linnet-
     Xenophile]  Neat new stuff from the hot Finnish folk group.  They've
     gone a bit more contemporary in their sound (aitara means "drums",
     and they've added a drummer).  Lots of original compositions and less
     strictly trad material.
BIG SANDY AND HIS FLY-RITE BOYS - Hi-Billy Music [JUMPING FROM 6 TO 6/
     Hightone]  I blame Steve Gardner for this one.  Terrific rockabilly
     and more, and these guys are local to me!  I have no excuse for not
     having seen them.
DAVID DOUCET - J'Etais au Bal [ALLIGATOR STOMP, VOLUME 5: CAJUN & ZYDECO,
     THE NEXT GENERATION/Rhino]  Great flatpicking guitar, taking runs 
     that one is accustomed to hearing on fiddle or accordion on this song.
SEBADOH - Rebound (acoustic) [REBOUND single/Sub Pop]  Single from BAKESALE
     with three acoustic tracks.
UNCLE TUPELO - Whiskey Bottle [NO DEPRESSION/Rockville]  I think I'll 
     play at least one UT song each week until the new Wilco album is out,
     and until Jay's band's new album is out to boot.
 
DR. DIDG - Devon [OUT OF THE WOODS/Hannibal]  New band from former Outback
     didgeridooist Graham Wiggins, who's picked up a funky new guitar
     player.
SONNY LANDRETH - C'est Chaud [SOUTH OF I-10/Zoo]  Fiery southern Louisiana
     slide guitar, by request.
COWBOY MOUTH - How Do You Tell Someone? [IT MEANS ESCAPE/Monkey Hill]
 
THE BOTHY BAND - Patsy Geary's [LIVE IN CONCERT/BBC Records]
CHRISTY MOORE - Missing You [CHRISTY AT THE POINT LIVE!/Newberry-Columbia-
     Sony UK]  His cover of the great Jimmy McCarthy song.
PAT KILBRIDE - Don't Look Now [LOOSE CANNON/Green Linnet]  Terrific
     country song, with some sweet pedal steel.
SHANE MacGOWAN & THE POPES - Minstrel Boy [THAT WOMAN'S GOT ME DRINKING
     single/ZTT Records-Warner]  Yes, he's still alive!  No, he still hasn't
     gotten his teeth fixed.  Yes, he can still write great songs.  I like
     the new stuff, almost more raucous than the Pogues, but this is a 
     traditional number that fans of "Star Trek" might recognize ...

WADE FRUGE - Le Caillette est Crevee (The Little Calf is Dead) [OLD STYLE
     CAJUN MUSIC/Arhoolie]  Wade's only LP, recorded at age 72, not long
     before his death.  Vocals by Ann Savoy.
AMEDEE ARDOIN - Two-Step d'Eunice [HIS ORIGINAL RECORDINGS/Old Timey]
     Classic stuff.  Amedee is still influential in Cajun and zydeco.
     He was the first black Creole to record, and many of his songs are
     standards.
THE LAWTELL PLAYBOYS - Baby Please Don't Go [LA LA: LOUISIANA BLACK FRENCH
     MUSIC/Maison de Soul]  Fantastic rural Creole band, almost pre-zydeco
     in their style.  Singer/accordionist Delton Broussard died last year,
     three days before Jazzfest.  The rest of the band went on anyway,
     because they knew he would have wanted them to.
DEWEY BALFA - Equand J'etais Pauvre [SOUVENIRS/Swallow]
ALY BAIN & PHIL CUNNINGHAM - J'ai Passe Devant ta Porte/Mamou Two-Step 
     Waltz [THE PEARL/Whirlie]  OK, here's where I kill the all-vinyl
     theme, but this was a good place for it.  Shetland fiddler Bain of
     Boys of the Lough and former Silly Wizard accordion whiz Cunningham
     in some masterful playing, and two of the weirdest Cajun covers I've
     ever heard.  
 
GRUPO CHANGUI - Laos, Cambodia y Vietnam [AHORA SI! THIS IS CHANGUI/Corason]
     New compilation of rootsy Cuban dance music style, based on tres
     guitar and percussion
RAFAELITO ARIAS y SU CONJUNTO - Luz Maria [ESENTIAL MERENGUE/Corason]
     Wild stuff!  Raucous Dominican dance music, based on some jammin'
     accordion playing.
JONATHAN RICHMAN - Harpo y su Harpa [JONATHAN, TE VAS A EMOCIONAR!/Rounder]
     By request.  Extremely weird.  Richman put out a whole album in Spanish
     last year, which I seemed to have missed.  He writes in Spanish not
     unlike how he writes in English ... this song is about Harop Marx.
