[WHAT'S HIS NAME/Maison de Soul] Debut album by the son of zydeco great Preston Frank KATELL KEINEG - Destiny's Darling [O SEASONS O CASTLES/Elektra] B. o'94. GEORGE PORTER JR. & RUNNING PARDNERS - Woogie Boogie [THINGS AIN'T WHAT THEY USED TO BE/Tranvideo] The funkiest bass player alive (of the funky Meters] with his own band's 2nd outing, recorded live at Jazzfest. B. o'94. THE CHIEFTAINS with STING - Mo Ghile Mear (Our Hero) [THE LONG BLACK VEIL/ RCA] You haven't lived until you've heard Sting sing in phonetic Irish ... and until you've seen the staid-looking Chieftains posing with the Rolling Stones. Bizarre as the concept is, this is a very good album, with additional appearances by Ry Cooder, Sinead O'Connor, Van the Man, et al. THE BOTHY BAND - The Kesh Jig/Give Us a Drink of Water/The Flower of the Flock/Famous Ballymots [LIVE IN CONCERT/BBC Records] THE JAYHAWKS - Blue [TOMORROW THE GREEN GRASS/American] Brand-spanking new, and mighty fine stuff. HIGH NOON - Crazy Mixed Up World [TEXAS STYLE/Exile Records] Terrific country/rockabilly band from Austin. Picked up this 10" vinyl blind on a trip to Aron's. COWBOY MOUTH - Hey Bartender [IT MEANS ESCAPE/Monkey Hill-Ichiban] A Paul Sanchez song from his solo album, done up country-style with some great pedal steel here. BECK - Rowboat [STEREOPATHETIC SOULMANURE/Flipside] Quiet, acoustic stuff like he played opening for Johnny Cash the other week. Guitar, slide guitar, a drum with brushes. Great. (The day after the Cash gig, my friend Terry saw Beck at the Virgin Megastore looking for Johnny Cash box sets ...) ROSE MADDOX - Sin City [$35 AND A DREAM/Arhoolie] Brand new stuff from the Queen of the West, sounding as great as ever. I thought this Gram Parsons tune was appropriate, on the eve of the anniversary of the ol' earthquake that didn't quite put me in the poorhouse ... JUNE TABOR - Shameless Love [AGAINST THE STREAM/Green Linnet] Quiet and dark, this new one. I love it, though! DAVID GRISMAN & TONY RICE - I Don't Want Your Mandolins, MIster [TONE POEMS/ Acoustic Disc] B. o'94. The 1:00am feature .. The Man in Black. JOHNNY CASH - Folsom Prison Blues [THE ESSENTIAL JOHNNY CASH/Columbia] JOHNNY CASH - Orange Blossom Special [ESSENTIAL] MINGO SALDIVAR Y SUS QUATROS ESPADAS - Rueda de Fuego [MARIE/Espada] A norteno version of "Ring of Fire", in Spanish with accordion! JOHNNY CASH - Five Feet High and Rising [ESSENTIAL] By request. THE GRATEFUL DEAD - Big River [ONE FROM THE VAULT/Grateful Dead Records] PANSY DIVISION with CALVIN JOHNSON - Jackson [7" single/B Records] June Carter came out and sang this with Johnny at the show last week. This version is by a San Fransicso homocore punk band, with former Beat Happening and current Halo Bender (and owner of B Records, who put out Beck's ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE release). Saw this in the singles bin at Aron's and couldn't resist. Wild stuff! JOHNNY CASH - Rock Island Line [ESSENTIAL] JOHNNY CASH - Singin' in Viet Nam Talkin' Blues [ESSENTIAL] JOHNNY CASH - Redemption [JOHNNY CASH/American Recordings] CHRISTY MOORE - Knock [CHRISTY AT THE POINT LIVE!/Newberry-Columbia UK] SEAMUS BEGLEY & STEPHEN COONEY - Kings of Kerry [MEITHEAL/Hummingbird] TADHG MAD DHOMHNAILL - Mo Mhaire [RAIFTEIRI SAN UNDERGROUND/Clo Iar- Chonnachta] THE TANNAHILL WEAVERS - The Log Spiltter Set [CAPERNAUM/Green Linnet] B. o'94. KRISTI GUILLORY & BILL GRASS - Allons au Fais Do-Do [REVEILLE/Swallow] Amazing stuff. Guillory is 15 years old, plays the accordion brilliantly already, and has a powerful voice. Grass is 18, a recent high school grad, and a Louisiana All-State filddle champion. They play traditional and newly-written songs in the tradition, and no member of the gband is over 20. The future of Cajun music is assured. STEVE RILEY & THE MAMOU PLAYBOYS - La Pointe aux Pis [LIVE!/Rounder] B. o'94. DENNIS McGEE - La Valse du Vacher (The Cowboy Waltz) [THE COMPLETE EARLY RECORDNGS/Yazoo] A Best of '94 release of songs from the '20s and '30s. Finally gathered and remastered, this is brilliant stuff. McGee wsa the godfather of Cajun fiddlers, and is highly revered. Essential. BEAUSOLEIL - Chez Denouse McGee [L'ECHO/Forward-Rhino] Mike Doucet sings of the good times, great music and strong coffee he had over the years at Dennis' house. B. o'94.
