GUMBO #200 Sunday, December 11, 1994 / Midnight - 3:00am KCRW Santa Monica, 89.9 FM KCRY Indio - Palm Springs, 89.3 FM KCRU Oxnard - Ventura County, 89.1 FM ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Opening Theme: ALIAS RON KAVANA - Soweto Trembles (The Jo'burg Jig) [THINK LIKE A HERO/Chiswick Records] THE BUCKS - Dancing to the Ceili Band [DANCING TO THE CEILI BAND/WEA U.K.] Fantastic debut album by Ron Kavana and former Pogue Terry Woods in their new band, featuring Paddy Keenan of the Bothy Band on uilleann pipes. Best contemporary Irish trad/folk release in ages. Unfortunately, although the album was only recently released, the band has already broken up ... longtime friends Kavana and Woods decided they couldn't get along together in the same band. Oh well ... TARIKA - Ankoay [BIBIANGO/Xenophile-Green Linnet] Lead singer and principal singer Hanitra of Tarika Sammy seems to have decided to get rid of Sammy and Tiana (I *still* don't know what the deal is here), but the band seems not to have suffered. The playing and writing from this Malagasy band (whose shortened name means simply "The Group") is fantastic! Acoustic roots music at its best. THE HUMPFF FAMILY - Love, Death, Divorce, Prison, Alcohol, Rivers and Trains [FATHERS/Iona] Fun and engaging folk/roots-rock band from Scotland, from their second album. PALACE SONGS - All Gone, All Gone [HOPE/Drag City] Yet another permutation of Will Oldham's Palace Brothers, the incredibly prolific, stark alternative/roots-country band out of Louisville, Kentucky. This is a 6-song EP, after a full album and several 7" singles this year. 1000% better, and more full of true emotion than all of that crap that comes out of Nashville. JOHN HIATT AND THE GUILTY DOGS - Tennessee Plates [HIATT COMES ALIVE AT BUDOKAN?/A&M] Well, not really, but live recordings from around the U.S. with Hiatt's new, harder-edged band. Great stuff. SONNY LANDRETH - C'est Chaud [SOUTH OF I-10/Zoo] Superb fourth album from Lafayette-based slide guitarist, singer and songwriter. Guests range from Errol Verret on Cajun accordion to Mark Knopfler on National steel guitar. Fiery! JOHN DOE - I Can't Hold Myself In Line [TULARE DUST: A SONGWRITERS' TRIBUTE TO MERLE HAGGARD/Hightone] GREG BROWN - Driftless [THE POET'S GAME/Red Hose] GRATEFUL DEAD - Dire Wolf [RECKONING/Arista] From their 1980 acoustic tour, recorded live, in honor of their appearance in L.A. this week. PAUL SANCHEZ - My Little Blue One [JET BLACK AND JEALOUS/Little Fish Platters] Solo acoustic debut from Cowboy Mouth member, one of their three singers/songwriters. Superb. SHARON SHANNON - Sparky [OUT THE GAP] Fine second release from Irish accordionist from Clare. EOIN DUIGNAN - Fag i Do Dhiadh E/Ar Aghiagh Leis an Obair [COUMINEOL/ Gael-Linn] Debut from Dingle, Co. Kerry based uilleann piper, low whistle player and composer. ANDY IRVINE - Never Tire of the Road [RUDE AWAKENING/Green Linnet] THE 4 OF US - Boomtown [MAN ALIVE/Columbia U.K.] Newry, Co. Down based rhythmic, soulful pop band. The 1:00am feature ... The Blues. (Hats off to Andrew Trentacosta.) SATAN AND ADAM - I Want You [HARLEM BLUES/Flying Fish] RONNIE EARL & THE BROADCASTERS - Green Light [LANGUAGE OF THE SOUL/Bullseye Blues] New release. MUDDY WATERS - Walkin' Blues [THE LONDON MUDDY WATERS SESSIONS/MCA] Searing acoustic version of Willie Dixon classic. RY COODER - The Bourgeois Blues [CHICKEN SKIN MUSIC/Reprise] Ry does the Leadbelly/Lomax classic, playing guitar, mandola and Cajun accordion. CLIFTON CHENIER - Louisiana Blues [LOUISIANA BLUES AND ZYDECO/Arhoolie] Stunning zydeco blues, one of the finest blues songs ever recorded, in my opinion. "Tous les jours j'parle le meme chose ..." PATRICK STREET - Music for a Found Harmonium [IRISH TIMES/Green Linnet] My favorite version of this Penguin Cafe Orchestra tune (I collect 'em ...) OLD BLIND DOGS - A Wife in Every Port [TALL TAILS/Lochshore] JUNE TABOR - Beat The Retreat [BEAT THE RETREAT: SONGS OF RICHARD THOMPSON/ Capitol] By request. CORDELIA'S DAD - Delia [HOW CAN I SLEEP?/OKra] Fantastic electric traditional band's version of the trad tune recently recorded on the new Johnny Cash album. JO-EL SONNIER - J'Etais au Bal [CAJUN ROOTS/Rounder] Jo-El finally dumps the Nashville sound and goes back to what's real. Michael Doucet guests of fiddle. By request. MAYEUS LAFLEUR & LEO SOILEAU - He Mom, Ayou Toi T'es?/Mama, Where You At? [RAISE YOUR WINDOW: A CAJUN MUSIC ANTHOLOGY, THE HISTORIC VICTOR/ BLUEBIRD RECORDINGS, 1928-1941, VOL. 2/Country Music Foundation] One of four 78 sides recorded by Cajun singer/songwriter Lafleur before he was killed in a barroom brawl, an innocent bystander, in 1929. He never lived to see their release, and never found his mom. BEAUSOLEIL - O Bebe Waltz [L'ECHO/Forward-Rhino] Amedee Breaux song, done in the '50s dancehall style. JOHN DELAFOSE & THE EUNICE PLAYBOYS featuring GENO DELAFOSE - Midland Two-Step [PERE ET GARCON ZYDECO/Rounder] Geno takes lead for the first time on this album, on vocals and accordion for this Amedee Ardoin song. CLIFTON CHENIER - Bogalusa Boogie [BOGALUSA BOOGIE/Arhoolie] By very special request. One of Clifton's nieces called and requested it!! THE THREE GHOULS (MAC REBENNACK) - Morgus the Magnificent [MOS' SCOCIOUS: THE DR. JOHN ANTHOLOGY/Rhino] Local novelty tune, recorded in 1958 in honor of local celebrity, physician, mad scientist and horror movie host Momus Alexander Morgus, M.C. (AKA local actor Sid Noel). THE WILD MAGNOLIAS - New Suit [THEY CALL US WILD/Polydor] 1975 album from N.O. black Indian tribe, backed up by Willie Tee, Earl Turbinton, Alfred "Uganda" Roberts, et a., finally rereleased. IRMA THOMAS - You Can Have My Husband [SIMPLY THE BEST: LIVE!/Rounder] ... but PLEASE don't mess with my man! The Soul Queen of New Orleans. THE NEVILLE BROTHERS - Mojo Hannah [NEVILLE-IZATION!/Spindletop] Recorded live at Tipitina's in 1982. THE POGUES with KIRSTY MacCOLL - Fairytale of New York [IF I SHOULD FALL FROM GRACE WITH GOD/Island] I was saving this for my Christmas special, but it was by request. CELTAS CORTOS - El Ritmo del Mar [CUENTAME UN CUENTO/Sony Discos Spain] "The Spanish Pogues", this Celtic folk-rock band from Galicia are the Pogues' Celtic soul brothers. ADRIAN LEGG - Paddy in the Synagogue/The Pregnant Folksinger [HIGH STRUNG TALL TALES/Relativity] More solo guitar from Legg, good stuff. And I love it when composers come up with neat names for tunes! TOWNES VAN ZANDT - If I Was Washington [NO DEEPER BLUE/Sugar Hill] The superb new album, by request. See, even a heathen like me loves gospel music ... FIVE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA - O Lord Stand By Me [O LORD STAND BY ME/ Specialty] REVEREND GARY DAVIS - Runnin' to the Judgment [PURE RELIGION AND BAD COMPANY/Smithsonian-Folkways] THE BAND with THE STAPLE SINGERS - The Weight [THE LAST WALTZ/Warner] THE SWAN SILVERTONES - Savior Pass Me Not [GET RIGHT WITH THE SWAN SILVERTONES/Archives Alive-Rhino]
