GUMBO #194 Sunday, October 30, 1994 / Midnight - 3:00am KCRW Santa Monica, 89.9 FM KCRY Indio - Palm Springs, 89.3 FM KCRU Oxnard - Ventura County, 89.1 FM ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Opening Theme: ALIAS RON KAVANA - Soweto Trembles (The Jo'burg Jig) [THINK LIKE A HERO/Chiswick Records] MALDITA VECINDAD - El Circo [EL CIRCO/BMG-Ariola] The mighty alternative roots-punk band plays this Tuesday at the Palace -- general admission. It will, no doubt, be intense pandemonium, and I can't wait! BOTTLE ROCKETS - Gas Girl [BOTTLE ROCKETS/East Side Digital] Indie roots- country band led by Brian Henneman, the unofficial "fifth member" of Uncle Tupelo and Wilco. Great stuff. CONTINENTAL DRIFTERS - Invisible Boyfriend [CONTINENTAL DRIFTERS/Monkey Hill] Fitting perfectly into the indie/roots/country/rock vein, the new Peter Holsapple project is wonderful. Peter's not the frontman, though; there are two other lead singers, including Peter's wife Susan Cowsill. Based in New Orleans. GREG BROWN - Jesus and Elvis [THE POET GAME/Red House] I love this guy! BEAUSOLEIL - Quel Espoir [L'ECHO/Forward-Rhino] Another first for Beausoleil ... vibes! (I can hear Marc Savoy grumblng already ...) And old string-band era song from the '30s, by the Alley Boys of Abbeville. PAUL SANCHEZ - Joe Black [WASTED LIVES AND BLUEGRASS/Monkey Hill] BLACK 47 - Black Rose [HOME OF THE BRAVE/SBK-EMI] Nice bouncy reggae beat and some Irish toasting at the end. DAVY SPILLANE with SEAN TYRRELL - Starry Night [A PLACE AMONG THE STONES/ Columbia UK] He's moved up from Tara to a major ... and a bit further away from the tradition. Still, excellent playing and composing, the tunes are excellent, and there are two songs by Sean. Still, some weird guests ... Steve Winwood?!? Maire Brennan from Clannad is a welcome guest on harp and vocals, but dare I breathe the dreaded word? Is Davy moving toward a newage sound? (Rhymes with "sewage" ...) DEANTA - The Rocky Reels [READY FOR THE STORM/Green Linnet] CHRISTY MOORE - The Reel in the Flickering Light [ORDINARY MAN/WEA Ireland] ANDY IRVINE - There's Sure To Be a Row [THE GATHERING] OLD BLIND DOGS - Linden Rise [CLOSE TO THE BONE/Lochshore] Wild Johnny Cunningham tune, from the Dogs' second. They'll be at McCabe's with Andy Irvine on November 11. (My birthday!) POPS STAPLES - Jesus Is Going To Make Up (My Dying Bed) [FATHER FATHER/ Pointblank] With Ry Cooder and the Paramount Singers A set of music, for absent friends ... KALLE AND ROCHEREAU with ORCHESTRA AFRICA JAZZ - Afrika Mokili Mobimba [MBUKI MVUKI/Original Music] The theme song of the recently-cancelled (after 11 years) program, "The African Beat", done by Tabu Ley Rochereau LOKASSA & SOUKOUS STARS - Lagos Nights medley [MEGAMIX, VOL. 1] I told a story about how CC brought this into the station one day, and played it on the air for Solomon and Ade as a surprise, and left the mikes open. It's a Zairean soukous medley of Nigerian hits. Ade and Solomon completely freaked out, and spent the next 15 minutes wildly dancing around the studio, and the listeners got to hear their reactions, too. It was magical radio. CRESCENT CITY GOLD - Red and Lee [THE ULTIMATE SESSION/High Street] Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Red Tyler, Lee Allen, and a whole slew of fantastic New Orleans musicians. THE METERS - They All Axed For You [MARDI GRAS IN NEW ORLEANS, VOL. 2/ Mardi Gras Records] THE NEVILLE BROTHERS - Fiyo On the Bayou [FIYO ON THE BAYOU/A&M] THE WILD MAGNOLIAS - Handa Wanda, Part 1 [THE WILD MAGNOLIAS/Polydor] FREEDY JOHNSTON - Responsible [CAN YOU FLY/Bar None] Saw him in New Orleans at Tipitina's, after my meal at Brigtsen's of panneed rabbit with sauteed spinace and Creole mustard sauce; grilled drumfish with crabmeat parmesan crust and lemon mousselline sauce; and banana pecan bread pudding with Bananas Foster sauce ... sorry, but it was fresh in my mind. THE MOVIE STARS - I Fall to Pieces [HEAD ON A PLATTER/Whirlaway] Former Bay Area band, perhaps Chuck's favorite indie/roots/country/rock/ Cajun/Norteno/chicken scratch/polka band of all time ... sigh. THE PALACE BROTHERS - I Tried To Stay Healthy For You [THERE IS NO ONE WHAT WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU/Drag City] MEAT PUPPETS - Lake of Fire (acoustic) [LAKE OF FIRE single/London] Great country/gospel type of song. There's a version coming out on the NIrvana UNPLUGGED CD which sounds fantastic. VICTORIA WILLIAMS - Sunshine Country [LOOSE/Mammoth] Simply a delight. MARTIN STEPHENSON & THE DAINTEES - Big Sky New Light [THE BOY'S HEART/ Kitchenware UK] SCULLION - The Actor [GHOSTS AND HEROES/Kitten] Sonny Condell, Philip King and Robbie Overton make up this legendary Irish folk/rock band. TOASTED HERETIC - Anglepoise Park [MINDLESS OPTIMISM/Bananafish] Galway's finest! FREDDIE WHITE - Northern Ireland [STRAIGHT UP/Little Don] Belfast singer-songwriter, recorded live at An Be/al Bocht in Dublin. BRAVE COMBO - Hava Negila Twist [THE HOKEY POKEY/Dentone] These guys are wacky! TROKA - STrommerschottis [TROKA/Olarin Musiikki, Finland] Excellent young Finnish folk band. LA CUCINA - Zio Pepe [from the FOLK ROOTS sampler CD #3, but the full CD is on the way!] RADIM ZENKL - Rock Slide Area [CZECH IT OUT/Acoustic Disc] Wild young Czech mandolinist, who does *slide* mandolin here! MALDITA VECINDAD - Rafael [MALDITA VECINDAD Y LOS HIJOS DEL QUINTO PATIO/ BMG-Ariola] THE SETTERS - Shaking All Over the Place [THE SETTERS/Watermelon] Roots-rock from Austin's Alejandro Escovedo and Michael Hall, and Miami's Walter Salas-Humara of the Silos. MATT KEATING - McHappiness [SCARYAREA/Alias] DAVE MATTHEWS BAND - What Would You Say [UNDER THE TABLE AND DREAMING/RCA] ALLEN CLAPP AND HIS ORCHESTRA - Something Strange Happens [ONE HUNDRED PERCENT CHANCE OF RAIN/Bus Stop] Very poppy, but incredibly engaging.
