A rollicking performance, and a very rare English- language vocal DAVY SPILLANE - Atlantic Bridge [ATLANTIC BRIDGE/Tara] With Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Christy Moore, Eoghan O'Neill, et al. GENO DELAFOSE - French Rockin' Boogie [FRENCH ROCKIN' BOOGIE/Rounder] with Joe Cabral and Derek Huston of the Iguanas on saxes. PAUL SANCHEZ - I Know What You're Thinkin' [WASTED LIVES AND BLUEGRASS/ Monkey Hil] Excellent blues opener for the album, the only electric track therein. PALACE BROTHERS - I Am A Cinematographer [PALACE BROTHERS/Drag City] Brand new, just Will Oldham and his acoustic guitar. Stark, timeless and gorgeous. CAFE TACUBA - La Negrita [RE/WEA Latina] THE HOUSE BAND - Tom Hark/African Market Place [ANOTHER SETTING/Green Linnet] Terrific new album; this track featuring tunes from and inspired by South African pennywhistle playing WEST NKOSI - Mazuzu (Young Woman) [RHYTHM OF HEALING: SAXOPHONE AND PENNYWHISTLE TOWNSHIP JIVE/Earthworks] VICTORIA WILLIAMS - Century Plant [LOOSE/Mammoth] Hooray! A new album from one of my favorite singers and songwriters, and one of the sweetest people I've ever met. THE GERALDINE FIBBERS - Marmalade [GET THEE GONE/Sympathy for the Record Industry] Great new alternative hardcore-country band, led by Carla Bozulich, formerly of Ethyl Meatplow (talk about something completely different!) Mixing the sweet and the harsh, the sacred and the profane, originals and covers from Dolly Parton to Georges Jones ... I love 'em! BLUE RODEO - Cynthia [FIVE DAYS IN JULY/Discovery] PETER ROWAN & THE ROWAN BROTHERS - Long Time [TREE ON A HILL/Sugar Hill] Now, a whole set from the new Richard Thompson tribute album, BEAT THE RETREAT (SONGS OF RICHARD THOMPSON) on Capitol ... Liam O Maonlai/ is a brilliant sean-nos singer and bodhran player who was raised speaking Irish. I've heard him do this song in its entirety, and he's great. STEVE RILEY & THE MAMOU PLAYBOYS - Bosco Stomp/Zydeco est pas sale [LIVE!/ Rounder] AMEDEE ARDOIN & DENNIS McGEE - Madame Atchen [CAJUN DANCE PARTY: FAIS DO-DO/ Columbia-Legacy] BUCKWHEAT ZYDECO - Crawfish Song [CHOO CHOO BOOGALOO/Music for Litle People] A children's zydeco album! Bobbie DeWald, one of my most loyal listeners (who's hospitalized with cancer and who sleeps all day Sunday so that she can stay up and listen) called a few weeks back and requested some Welsh music, so I did some digging through my collection and came up with a set of rock, folk-rock and traditional music (y'all shoulda heard my pronunciation on the back announcing ... oy! What a mouthful! At least I'd learned a few pronunciation rules ...): Y CYRFF - Seibiant [LLAWENYDD HEB DDIWEDD/Ankst] Folk-rock band that's reminiscent of REM, The Reivers, et al. Nifty stuff. PLETHYN - Y Gwylliaid [BLAS Y PRYDD/Sain] Probably the pre-eminent Welsh folk band. JIM O'ROURKE - Deg Mewn Bedd (Ten In A Grave) [Y BONT/Sain] Welsh songwriter/singer/guitarist of Irish descent. This song is about the Irish hunger strikers who died in prison, and pleads for peace. With Davy Spillane and Donal Lunny. 4 YN Y BAR - Stryd America [STRYD AMERICA/Fflach] One of the major Welsh folk bands, a little more contemporary than Plethyn's style. HEFIN HEWS - Pero [CICIO'N OL/Crai] Welsh rocker; neat stuff. R.E.M. - What's the Frequence, Kenneth? [MONSTER/Warner] First single from the forthcoming album. I've been with this band since day one, and for me they can do no wrong. SUGAR - Gee Angel [FILE UNDER: EASY LISTENING/Ryko] PAUL KELLY - God's Hotel [WANTED MAN/Mushroom] UNCLE TUPELO - Still Be Around [STILL FEEL GONE/Rockville] By request. DUKE ROBILLARD - Temptatin [TEMPTATION/Bullseye Blues] X - Shoot Out the Lights [BEAT THE RETREAT (SONGS OF RICHARD THOMPSON)/ Capitol] By request. BARENAKED LADIES - Jane [MAYBE YOU SHOULD DRIVE] Second (and better) album from engaging Canadian folk-rockers. HEDNINGARNA - Lacknafta [HEDNINGARNA]
