     Opening Theme:
ALIAS RON KAVANA - Soweto Trembles (The Jo'burg Jig)
                         [THINK LIKE A HERO/Chiswick Records]
GENO DELAFOSE - C'est pas la peine brailler [FRENCH ROCKIN' BOOGIE/Rounder]
Marvelous debut from John's son, on accordions and writing several
new songs, including this one. Joe Cabral and Derek Huston of the
Iguanas guest on saxes. The future of zydeco is assured.
THE IGUANAS - My Girlfriend Is a Waitress [NUEVO BOOGALOO/Margaritaville-MCA]
THE DORKESTRA - Still Got You [11593/Scratch]
PETE DROGE - Sunspot Stopwatch [NECKTIE SECOND/American] A few rockers
here, but mostly great country-folk-ish singing and songwriting.
     A fine debut.
FERNEST ARCENEAUX - Bernadette [ZYDECO BLUES PARTY/Mardi Gras] Fernest
wails here, with four former members of Clifton Chenier's best
incarnation of the Red Hot Louisiana Band.

 BEAUSOLEIL - Acadian Two-Step [HOT CHILI MAMA/Arhoolie]
THE SEGURA BROTHERS - A Mosquito Ate Up My Sweetheart [LOUISIANA CAJUN
MUSIC, VOLUME 1: FIRST RECORDINGS, THE '20S/Old Timey] I *love*
     the lyrics of this song.
AL BERARD & ERROL VERRET - Fais Do-Do Waltz [C'EST DANS LE SANG CADJIN/
Swallow] A beautiful new waltz for the tradition.
WALLACE "CHEESE" READ - Bayou Pom Pom [CAJUN HOUSE PARTY/Arhoolie]

I felt like some real country music, as opposed to 99% of the crap coming
out of Nashville, plus a few interesting departures, so ...
FREAKWATER - You've Never Been This Far Before [FEELS LIKE THE THIRD TIME/
Thrill] Wonderful roots-country band, female vocalists, originals
plus covers like this Conway Twitty song. Get this!
ROSE MADDOX - Dark As A Dungeon [ROSE OF THE WEST COAST COUNTRY/Arhoolie]
BECK - Cyanide Breath Mint [ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE/K Records] Spare, all-
acoustic country-folk album. Better than his major label one.
JPP - Texas Blues [KAUSTINEN RAPSODIA/Olarin Musiikki, Finland] A sweet
     country blues from this band of Finnish fiddlers led by Arto Jarvela;
     Texan-Finnish composer Erik Hokkainen co-wrote.
UNCLE TUPELO - New Madrid [ANODYNE/Sire-Reprise]

LUKA BLOOM - To Begin To [TURF/Reprise]
PARSON'S HAT - Siobhan Ni Dhuibhir [THE BETTER MATCH/Clo Iar-Chonnachta]
Gorgeous Irish and English vocals from this Connemara band.
 ALTAN - Reels: Tommy Peoples'/The Windmill/Fintan McManus' [ISLAND ANGEL/
     Green Linnet]
CLANNAD - Na Buachailli Alainn [FUAIM/Tara] By request, sorta. He wanted
"Theme from Harry's Game", which IMO is far too overplayed. Papa
     knows best ...
LIAM O'FLYNN - Hornpipes: Dollards/The Harlequin [OUT TO AN OTHER SIDE/Tara]
Master of the uillean pipes, with a small folk/chamber orchestra (and
vocalists Rita Connolly and The Voice Squad on some tracks), here
demonstrating his mastery of the hornpipe.

 THE SILOS - Commodore Peter [THE SILOS/RCA] Cuban-American singer-songwriter
Walter Salas-Humara and his Miami roots-alternative band, from their
     1990 release.
IAIN MATTHEWS - I Drove [THE DARK RIDE/Watermelon]
ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO - Gravity (Buick McKane version) [THE END-LOSING YOUR
     TOUCH ep/Watermelon] Electric version.
PETER BLEGVAD - Shirt and Comb (live) ["KING STRUT" 45 single B-side/S.O.L.]
A 1992 live version, out on Bob Mould's "Singles Only Label"

RARA MACHINE - Ginen Yo [VOUDOU NOU/Shanachie] Second album from Haitian
     vodun-Carnival-Afro-Caribbean band.
THE WILD MAGNOLIAS - Injuns, Here We Come [THEY CALL US WILD/Polydor]
THE METERS - People Say [REJUVENATION/Warner Bros.] Looooooong out of print
1974 LP from the godfathers of New Orleans funk.

fIREHOSE - Blaze [MR. MACHINERY OPERATOR/Columbia]
fIREHOSE - Candle and the Flame [RAGIN', FULL-ON/SST]
TOASTED HERETIC - Heart Attack [MINDLESS OPTIMISM/Bananafish] By request.
THE REIVERS - Breathin' Easy [POP BELOVED/dB Records]
THE SPINANES - Epiphany [MANOS/Sub Pop]

TOM WAITS - Tom Traubert's Blues [SMALL CHANGE/Asylum] From one of my ten
     desert island discs ...
COLORBLIND JAMES EXPERIENCE - She Took The Ring Off A Dead Man's Finger
[SOLID! BEHIND THE TIMES/Red House Records]
OLD WORLD FOLK BAND - Terkeshe Yale Y'vove Tantz [HOT TRACKS: KLEZMER, ETC./
     Old World]
RON KAVANA - I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight [THE WORLD IS A
WONDERFUL PLACE: THE SONGS OF RICHARD THOMPSON/Green Linnet]

LUCINDA WILLIAMS - Which Will [RARE ON AIR, VOLUME 1/Mammoth] A Nick Drake
tune from KCRW's live performance compilation CD. BTW, I've seen the
preliminary tracks for Volume 2, and it looks fantastic.
GRATEFUL DEAD - Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad [ONE FROM THE VAULT/Grateful
     Dead Records] Traditional song.
