THE IGUANAS - La Tentacion [NUEVO BOOGALOO/Margaritaville-MCA]
JOHN HIATT - True Believer [CROSS MY FINGERS single/A&M] raucous roots-
rocker, apparently recorded for some upcoming film soundtrack.

LUKA BLOOM - Freedom Song [TURF/Reprise]
 CORDELIA'S DAD - Banks of the Lee [CORDELIA'S DAD/OKra Records] I love
these guys, electric folkers who do all traditional material.
the subdudes - Sugar Pie [ANNUNCIATION/High Street] By request.
OSCAR LOPEZ - Bailando Rumba [DANCING ON THE MOON/Fantasy of Latin Strings]
Fantasy indeed. Sparkling great stuff ... got two phone calls!

A partially requested set to help commiserate the Irish World Cup loss
 to Mexico last Friday ...
THE POGUES - Fiesta [IF I SHOULD FALL FROM GRACE WITH GOD/Island] Shane
and Spider growling in English and pseudo-sorta-Spanish that I
can't quite parse ... via e-mail request from Atlanta!
 MALDITA VECINDAD - Ton~o [EL CIRCO/BMG-Ariola] A "mariachi reggae"
     song from brilliant Mexican roots-punks.

     VOL. 3: MARIACHI VARGAS/Arhoolie]

He just asked for LL, I picked a nice sad one.

The usually-weekly 1:00am Featured Artist segment ... The Grateful Dead!
Not just '60s psychedelia and free-form improvisation, but folk, country,
blues, gospel, and many more American roots styles. Remember that Jerry
was a folkie first, his first instrument was a 5-string banjo, and his
first band was a folk/bluegrass band. The Jerry Garcia Band is a true,
pure American roots band, but the Dead get their good licks in, too. This
maddeningly short set concentrated on the acoustic, folky and traditional:
GRATEFUL DEAD - Cumberland Blues [WORKINGMAN'S DEAD/Warner] It may have
been written Hunter/Garcia, but a style and story straight from the
     American tradition.
GRATEFUL DEAD - Ripple [AMERICAN BEAUTY/Warner] One of the most beautiful
songs ever, IMO. Appears in the folksong compilation _Rise Up Singing!_
     from _Sing Out!_ magazine.
GRATEFUL DEAD - Jack-a-Roe [RECKONING/Arista] Traditional song of probably
English origin; from the live acoustic album recorded in 1980.
GRATEFUL DEAD - Big River [ONE FROM THE VAULT/Grateful Dead Records]
Johnny Cash song, and a Dead favorite. Recorded live 1975.

OLD BLIND DOGS - MacPherson's Rant/The Winging [CLOSE TO THE BONE/Lochshore]
THE BOTHY BAND - Casadh an tSugain [AFTER HOURS/Green Linnet] This one
was a dedication! A friend called up and wanted a slow, sad Irish
love song for the woman he had just met and wanted to ask out. I
picked this one, in Irish, and one of my favorites. From Louie in
Highland Park to Karen in La Can~ada. How sweet!
ALAN STIVELL with SHANE MACGOWAN - Tri Martolod [AGAIN/FDM-Keltia] You
haven't lived until you've heard Shane, that owld hoor, singing in
     (presumed) phonetic Breton!
BOYS OF THE LOUGH - Reels: The Boys of the Lough/Lucky in Love/Sleep
Sound in the Morning/The Pinch of Snuff [THE FAIR HILLS OF IRELAND/
Sage Arts] I broke down and picked it up on the way to the station,
spending the nex two days' lunch money. New, and excellent.

EDDI READER - The Exception [EDDI READER/Blanco y Negro-Warner UK] New
import-only (so far) second solo release by former Fairground
     Attraction folk-pop singer. Sweet stuff.
EDDI READER, BOO HEWERDINE & CLIVE GREGSON - Wonderful Lie [EDDI READER,
BOO HEWERDINE & CLIVE GREGSON EP/Haven Records, UK] Stunningly
gorgeous 3-song ep. This song appears on her new album, but this
version, with Boo on lead vocals, in superior, IMO.
ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO - Two Angels [THE END CD single/Watermelon] Live
version of Peter Case song, w/ Susan Voelz of Poi Dog Pondering on
     violin, and a cellist. Sweet.
 TISH HINOJOSA - Esperate [DESTINY'S GATE/Elektra]

I was getting *really* sleepy, needed something loud to jolt me awake ...
HUSKER DU - Divide and Conquer [THE LIVING END/Warner] Recorded during
the Huskers' final tour, October 1987. Bob's my hero!
MEAT PUPPETS - Shine [TOO HIGH TO DIE/London] In a blind taste test, I'd
bet that most of y'all would program this track on an all-folk show!
PETER HIMMELMAN - Always in Disguise [RARE ON AIR, VOLUME 1/Mammoth]
Recorded live at KCRW in 1993. Gorgeous.
PETER BLEGVAD - Northern Lights [KING STRUT AND OTHER STORIES/Silvertone]
Mostly-acoustic album, terrific songs, and one of Chuck's desert
island discs. Produced by Chris Stamey.

WALLACE "CHEESE" READ - Bosco Stomp [CAJUN HOUSE PARTY/Arhoolie] Finally
re-released, with extra tracks. Cheese on fiddle and vocals, Marc
     Savoy on accordion.
BEAU JOCQUE & THE ZYDECO HI-ROLLERS - Don't Tell Your Mama, Don't Tell Your
     Papa [PICK UP ON THIS!/Rounder]
 I. K. DAIRO, M.B.E., AND HIS BLUE SPOTS - Ekun Rere (All Charged Up)
     [ASHIKO/Green Linnet-Xenophile] Nigerian guitarist/accordionist.
ROBERT PETE WILLIAMS - Pardon Denied Again [I'M AS BLUE AS A MAN CAN BE/
Arhoolie] Recorded live at Angola State Penitentiary, Louisiana, 1959-
1960. I'd be prety damned blue, too ...

POI DOG PONDERING - Pulling Touch [POI DOG PONDERING/Texas Hotel]
RAYMOND KANE - Pauoa Liko Ka Lehua [PUNAHELE/Dancing Cat] Hawaiian master
     of slack key guitar
VICTORIA WILLIAMS - Tarelly and Featherfoot [SWING THE STATUE/Rough Trade]
Recently re-released. Wonderful songwriter, I love her singing, and
     a thoroughly sweet human being.
MOXY FRUVOUS - River Valley [BARGAINVILLE/Atlantic Canada] Canadian
folky-acoustic-y ... I like what I hear, but didn't hear much of the
     album yet.

UNCLE TUPELO - Sandusky [MARCH 16-22, 1992/Rockville] Lovely instrumental,
and a nice bookend to finish up, then into Morning Edition ...
