     Opening Theme:
ALIAS RON KAVANA - Soweto Trembles (The Jo'burg Jig)
                         [THINK LIKE A HERO/Chiswick Records]

COWBOY MOUTH - Tears Toward Heaven [MOUTHING OFF (LIVE + MORE]/Viceroy]
     New Orleans' best rock band, laced with country and folk touches;
they make great albums and are an unbelievable live experience!
THE BLUERUNNERS - Turn It Off [THE CHATEAU CHUCK/Monkey Hill] from
Lafayette, La., this alternative rock band is most heavily
influenced by Cajun and zydeco music, and has the accordionist out
     front. Excellent new stuff.
 C. C. ADCOCK - What I Like (Womens) [C. C. ADCOCK/Island] Another
Lafayette native, he mixes blues, swamp pop, Cajun, New Orleans
R&B for a swampy spicy hot Louisiana gumbo. Recommended.
PAUL SANCHEZ - In My Dreams [JET BLACK AND JEALOUS/Little Fish Platters]
First solo acoustic album from Cowboy Mouth singer/songwriter; the
new one WASTED LIVES AND BLUEGRASS is due out any day now.
TOASTED HERETIC - Don't Tell Me We Don't Live [MINDLESS OPTIMISM/
Bananafish] Available for $20 from House of Heretic, 27 University
Road, Galway, Ireland. Tell 'em I said hi. (They thanked me in
the liner notes, those little dickenses! :-)

THE IGUANAS - El Orangutan [45 single] ... and a rare one. But a
newly-recorded version of this will be on their new album, NUEVO
     BOOGALOO, out on May 24th.
THE BLAZERS - Tiburon, Tiburon [SHORT FUSE/Rounder] Just another great
band from East L.A.; they opened at several clubs during Jazzfest
and caused quite a stir. Great roots-rock.
BRUCE DAIGREPONT - Tipitina Two-Step [PETIT CADEAU/Rounder] Five
years in the making! And it was worth the wait ...
SNOOKS EAGLIN - Red Beans [TEASIN' YOU/Black Top] Great N.O. guitarist,
who backed Prof. Longhair among others.
PERCY HUMPHREY & THE CRESCENT CITY JOYMAKERS - Bourbon Street Parade
[LIVING NEW ORLEANS JAZZ 1974, FEATURING SWEET EMMA/Smoky Mary
Phonograph Co.] Percy is 89, and Willie on clarinet is 93; they're
the oldest living N.O. trad jazz musicians, and they closed out
     Jazzfest with quite a bang!

THE NEVILLE BROTHERS - Congo Square [LIVE ON PLANET EARTH/A&M] They've
been doing this great Sonny Landreth song for years now, and we've
finally got it on record with this excellent CD.
GEORGE PORTER, JR. AND RUNNIN' PARDNERS - Funkify Your Life [THINGS
AIN'T WHAT THEY USED TO BE/Transvideo] The funkiest bass player
on Earth, of the funky Meters, here with his own band. Also out
     on video.
SONNY LANDRETH - Soldier of Fortune [OUTWARD BOUND/Zoo] He should have
a new one out soon as well.

This week's featured artist: The Radiators, celebrating their 16th
anniversary as New Orleans' bastion of Fish Head Music!
THE RADIATORS - Mood to Move [LAW OF THE FISH/Epic]

     San Francisco, 3/20/93]

TERRANCE SIMIEN & THE MALLET PLAYBOYS - Tout Quel'qu'un [THERE'S ROOM
FOR US ALL/Black Top] by request. Terrance blew the roof off of
     Tipitina's last Tuesday!
THE NEW ORLEANS KLEZMER ALL-STARS - Terkische Yale V'Yove Tantz
[THE NEW ORLEANS KLEZMER ALL-STARS/Stretchy Records] These guys
are great! Straight klezmer, reggae klezmer, acid klezmer, trad-
itional jazz klezmer ... with an African-American drummer (Willie
Green of the Neville Brothers). Electric guitar on this one! Wild!

LUMP - Peanut in the Butt [SLOPPY ATROCITIES/Airline 61] Currently
riding at the top of the alternative crop in New Orleans, this
jazzy/funky/alternative/thrashy band is a whole lot of fun; their
sax player Ben Ellman is also in the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars.
And they dis Harry Connick Jr. in one of their songs ... heh.
SOULHAT - Prayin' for Rain [OUTDEBOX/Epic] Major label debut from
locally well-regarded Austin rootsy rock band.
POI DOG PONDERING - U Li La Lu [WISHING LIKE A MOUNTAIN AND THINKING
LIKE THE SEA/Texas Hotel-Columbia] They played Tipitina's on the
19th ... AND I MISSED IT! Dammit. And when I wore my Poi Dog
shirt at Jazzfest, people constantly stopped me to tell me how
great they were. Good news, though, is that this band is far from dead!
TOASTED HERETIC - Anglepoise Park [MINDLESS OPTIMISM/Bananafish] This
one got me a phone call *after* 2am ... not bad. The guy was in
some local band and wanted to buy the CD and cover this song!

This set attempts to re-create all the music I saw and heard at Jazzfest
on Saturday, April 30; it's only partially successful, as unfortunately
there are no recordings of what I saw last -- David Lindley and Ry Cooder,
with Joaquin Cooder on percussion and Bobby King, Terry Evans and Willie
Green Jr. on three-part gospel soul harmony vocals! Aiee! I sure hope
 someone was recording this ...
WOODENHEAD - Falling Up [THE BIG PICTURE/Broken Records, P. O. Box
19221, New Orleans, LA 70179-0228] Terrific jazz/rock instrumental
band that's been around in N.O. for 18 years now; this is their latest.
STEVE RILEY & THE MAMOU PLAYBOYS - La Pointe aux Pins [LIVE!/Rounder]
One of the younger-generation torch carriers for traditional Cajun
music; he and his band shine in this fourth album.
ALI FARKA TOURE & RY COODER - Soukora [TALKING TIMBUKTU/Hannibal]
RANDY NEWMAN - Rednecks [GOOD OLD BOYS/Warner] "College men from LSU/
Went in dumb, come out dumb too ..."
BOBBY KING & TERRY EVANS - Bald Head [LIVE AND LET LIVE!/Rounder] Produced
by Ry Cooder, with himself on slide.
DAVID LINDLEY & HANI NASER - Mercury Blues [OFFICIAL BOOTLEG: LIVE IN
TOKYO/Pleemhead] Available by sending a money order for $17 (made
     out to David P. Lindley) to The National Endowment for I, Mr. Dave;
     P. O. Box 1342, Claremont, CA 91711. Tell Mr. Dave I sent ya. ("Who?")

ARETHA FRANKLIN - Think [QUEEN OF SOUL/Rhino] Wonderful new 4-CD set
     from Rhino's Atlantic Masters series.
CYRIL NEVILLE & THE UPTOWN ALL-STARS - More Professor Longhair [THE FIRE
THIS TIME/Endangered Species Records, P. O. Box 750187, New Orleans
LA 70175] Cyril's band is uptown reggae funk, with spoken word and
hiphoppy elements in the gumbo ... passionate stuff.
CRESCENT CITY GOLD - Hang Tough [THE ULTIMATE SESSION/High Street] Allen
Toussaint, Mac Rebennack, Alvin "Red" Tyler, Lee Allen, and more! Aiee!
 BEAUSOLEIL - R. D. Special [LA DANSE DE LA VIE/Rhino-Forward] ... and
they've just recorded a new one to be released soon.

BOB WEIR, ROB WASSERMAN, NEIL YOUNG - Easy Answers [TRIOS/MCA]
TOASTED HERETIC - Here Comes the New Year [MINDLESS OPTIMISM/Bananafish]
