JOHN PRINE with BONNIE RAITT - Angel From Montgomery [JOHN PRINE LIVE/Oh Boy]
An old favorite, segueing smoothly from the song Rene ended
"Citybilly" with - Tammy Wynette singing Brian Wilson's "In My Room"
JONES AND LEVA - Satan I Won't Be Your Servant No More [JOURNEY HOME/Rounder]
Hard to believe they could top the last one; I love this album.
Brand-new old-time music!
THE FREIGHT HOPPERS - Trouble [WAITING ON THE GRAVY TRAIN/Rounder]
Wow. This album blazes! An instant contender for one of my
favorites of the year.
TOMMY JARRELL - God Gave Noah the Rainbow Sign [RAINBOW SIGN/County LP]
Played a "cover" of this a while back, by someone who had learned
the song from Tommy's playing. More North Carolina old-time music.
DWIGHT DILLER - Liza Jane [NEW PLOWED GROUND/Yew Pine Mountain Music]
More fiddling from Dwight's brand-new one, with Peter Irvine
of Cordelia's Dad on bones on this track
THE BAD LIVERS - I'm Goin' Back to Mom and Dad [INDUSTRY AND THRIFT/Sugar
Hill]
This one pushes any definition of "old time" or "bluegrass" bestowed
upon this band, but the threads are there, and they're fun. A
lot more electric stuff on this one, and I'm still deciding if
I like it or not.
THE IGUANAS - Late at Night [THE IGUANAS/Margaritaville-MCA]
From their lamentably out-of-print debut. They're appearing at
Jack's Sugar Shack on Friday the 18th - locals, do not miss this!
CONJUNTO JARDÍN - La Iguana [NUEVO SON JAROCHO/Trova]
Another wow. Libby and Cindy Harding (formerly of Huayucaltia)
are behind this band, which plays jarocho music - traditional
music from Veracruz, Mexico. This is a vibrant, tingly,
terrific album!
BETO VILLA Y SU ORQUESTA - La Chapaneca [FATHER OF ORQUESTA TEJANA/Arhoolie]
Villa played alto sax and led a Tejano orchestra; these
recordings were made in San Antonio from 1947-54. With Tony
de la Rosa on accordion.
LEDWARD KAAPANA with JERRY DOUGLAS - Steel Guitar Rag [WALTZ OF THE WIND/
Dancing Cat]
Lots of great folks on this album, from Bob Brozman (with whom
Led plays this week at Luna Park), Alison Krauss, Sonny Landreth,
and here with Douglas on dobro (natch). Sweet, sweet stuff.
KALAMA'S QUARTET - Hoo-Hihi Oe Ke Ike Mai (You're Beautiful to Behold)
KALAMA'S QUARTET/Arhoolie]
Classic Hawaiian recordings from the late 20s/early 30s.
DAVID LINDLEY AND WALLY INGRAM - Waimanolo Blues [TWANGO BANGO DELUXE/
Ulftone]
Mr. Dave does Hawaiian, on those gorgeous Weissenborn guitars
of his (natch again)
CAPERCAILLIE - The Tree [BEAUTIFUL WASTELAND/Survival]
CAPERCAILLIE - Alasdair Mhic Giolla Chasda [SIDEWAULK/Green Linnet]
CAPERCAILLIE - Miss Campbell of Sheeness/Balindore/Irish Jig [SIDEWAULK/
Green Linnet]
They're kicking off the Acoustic Music Series' first batch of concerts
here on campus at the new Performing Arts Center on the 24th -
locals, don't miss it!
DONAL LUNNY - Miss Monaghan's/The Man of the House/The Green Fields of
Glentown/The Mountain Lark [COOLFIN/Metro Blue-Capitol]
*gasp* ... it was worth the 11-year wait. Marvelous brand-new
release of Lunny's new band, featuring brilliant instrumentals
and vocals by Triona and Maighread Ni Dhomnhaill, Eddi Reader
and Marta Sebestyen.
GAELIC STORM - The Hills of Connemara [GAELIC STORM/OmTown]
Santa Monica-based high-energy FUN Irish pub band that was
featured in the steerage scenes in the film "Titanic". They're
led by a Corkman named Patrick Murphy; catch them locally
if you can.
TRAIN TO SLIGO - Still Believing [THE DARK AND THE LIGHT/cassette]
Legendary (to me, at least) locally-based Irish band in the 80s
whose membership included most of Midnight Well (Thom Moore,
Gerry O'Beirne, Janie Cribbs) plus local musicians Paulette
Gershen and Judy Gameral. Midnight Well did this one, as did
Mary Black some years later. I lovingly transferred this old
cassette to DAT and then CDR for safekeepping.
LUCINDA WILLIAMS - Memphis Pearl [SWEET OLD TOWN/Chameleon]
We had a ticket giveaway, but I forgot the new one ... d'oh.
This one did jes' fine, though.
TOWNES VAN ZANDT - Tecumseh Valley [REAR VIEW MIRROR/Sugar Hill]
You can never get enough Townes.
BRIAN HENNEMAN - Indianapolis [45 single/Rockville]
With Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy. "Is this hell or Indianapolis?"
JERRY GARCIA ACOUSTIC BAND - Oh The Wind and Rain [ALMOST ACOUSTIC/Grateful
Dead]
A favorite trad song, a favorite from Jerry's repertoire, and a
bizarre little murder ballad.
BALFA TOUJOURS - Les Tracas de Todd Balfa (Todd Balfa's Troubles)
[LA POINTE/Rounder]
Didn't get a chance to hear the whole thing before showtime,
but I liked this one - an original teasing Christine's cousin
about his woman troubles.
BEAUSOLEIL - Sophie [CAJUN CONJA/Rhino]
Listener request.
LEO SOILEAU AND MAYUSE LAFLEUR - Hé Mom, Ayoú Toi T'es? (Mama, Where You At?)
[RAISE YOUR WINDOW: A CAJUN MUSIC ANTHOLOGY/Country Music Foundation]
22-year-old accordionist Lafleur wrote this song in memory of his late
mother, and recorded four 78s in Atlanta with fiddler Soileau. He
never got to hear them; 9 days later he was shot dead while trying
to break up a barroom brawl.
DOC AND MERLE WATSON - I Wonder How the Old Folks Are At Home [HOME SWEET
HOME/Sugar Hill]
Doc and Merle recorded this in 1967, a mere 5 months after Merle
was given his first banjo. Sam Bush and others recorded backing
tracks for it this year. It works! Segueing right into tonight's
Sarcastic Deadhead ...
